OUTDOOR SMOCK: DESIGN

We created the name 'Craftwear' to describe workwear and accessories designed for creative and outdoor crafts. Considered, durable and useful kit for purpose driven makers.

In the beginning, inspired by the rural makers of Cornwall, we sketched a collection of overalls, smocks, trousers, work-shirts and outdoor jackets. As our little start-up gained momentum, we quickly realised our determination to make everything in house by hand came with inevitable limitations of time and cost. Back then as a self-funded, two-woman band, we decided to strip back and build the foundations of Francli Craftwear on the basic essentials to a creative, outdoor lifestyle - aprons and rucksacks.

Over the years we've honed our skills and evolved our rucksack and apron designs. From time to time, we've even managed to feed our love of outerwear with craftwear collaborations such as the Zero-Waste Makers Smock and Boatbuilder Dungarees. However clothing and outerwear is a design aspiration that isn't going away...

To get a little closer to launching a craftwear piece available to order, a hooded outdoor smock design has been in the works. A project of exploration to re-familiarise with pattern cutting, test out construction techniques and get your feedback.

Here are the notes of the process and progress so far...

A foul-weather outdoor smock for keeping out the elements when walking and stalking in the British countryside. It needs to be durable, comfortable and functional. Rain and wind is inevitable, so it must be water-proof and warm, yet still breathable and not too heavy...
